From the Desk

of the Editor.

I’ve beaten the odds again.  It appears that the anomaly that showed up on my remaining kidney in my last CT Scan is not a tumor but a cyst.  The doctors are going to wait six months before looking at it (and the rest of my body) again for tumors.  Six months is my normal time between CT Scans so evidently the doctors aren’t too concerned.

Living on the edge and never knowing when the next surprise will come is drastically different from the “It will never happen to me” life I lived for 59 years of my life.  In February I will be 65.  None of my doctors gave me any chance of reaching that age and it now appears I shall.

Although we all tend to live in that world of “it will never happen to me” my lesson in life has been that even if it happens, it will happen on God’s timetable not yours or your doctors.

I think there is a Masonic lesson in there somewhere.  In Masonry and especially in Scottish Rite Masonry we strive to learn the meaning of life.  How does a good man become better?

One answer to that question is that we must accept God’s plan with grace.  In our limited time on this earth God wants us to make our mark.  It isn’t how much money we make or the big house, or the toys we have that count.  When the final ledger of your life is reviewed it will be about how many people we help and how many people we make feel good about themselves.

What is really important in Masonry isn’t what you achieve in recognition or the title you have.  Those are things we give men who are searching for the meaning of life to keep them interested in the fraternity.

What is really important is, what have you done for your Brothers to assist them in their search for the meaning of life?  Will they remember you as a man who cared about them?
